An Ipsos Reuters poll shows slipping public support as living costs bite and Iran tensions rise. The narrow shift may reshape swing voter sentiment ahead of key contests.
According to a Reuters report Reuters.
The approval rating of U.S. President Donald Trump has fallen to a new low during his current term, amid growing discontent with his handling of the cost of living and the tense situation with Iran.
According to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, 34% of respondents approve of the president’s performance, while the previous poll conducted April 15-20 recorded 36%.
The survey was completed on April 27; most responses were collected before the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where Trump was due to speak.
It is not yet clear whether the event will affect public opinion of the U.S. leader, as its impact may unfold over time.
Since the start of his term, the approval rating has declined: in January 2025, 47% of the public approved of Trump.
Following the rise in gasoline prices amid the United States and Israel’s conflict with Iran, only 22% of respondents approve of his cost-of-living policy – three points lower than in the previous poll.
Among Republicans, 78% continue to back Trump, but 41% of them do not support his approach to the cost of living.
Among registered independent voters who could play a pivotal role in the midterms, Democrats were preferred by a 14-point margin – 34% to 20% for Republicans. About a quarter of those polled are still undecided.
According to the poll, only 34% of Americans support the U.S. conflict with Iran, compared with 36% in mid-April and 38% in March.
In March, Donald Trump’s job approval rating dropped to 44%.
The takeaway shows rising political tension in the United States and a broad range of voter sentiment about the next steps in domestic and foreign policy.
