President Donald Trump will join Republican Rep. Mike Lawler for an event later this week in the Hudson Valley to tout his economic agenda, the White House said Tuesday.
The president will deliver remarks with the congressman in Rockland County on Friday afternoon, according to an invitation.
“The President will discuss how he and Republicans in Congress delivered the largest middle-class tax cuts in history — including quadrupling the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction cap from $10,000 to $40,000,” White House spokesperson Liz Huston said in a statement. “The President will also draw a sharp contrast with Democrats in Congress, who unanimously voted against the Working Families Tax Cuts, which included lifting the SALT cap, eliminating taxes on Social Security, overtime, and tips, and enhancing the Child Tax Credit.”
No further details were available about where the president would give these remarks.
Lawler represents New York’s 17th Congressional District and was one of the more vocal advocates for SALT changes in the GOP’s multitrillion-dollar legislation last year. All House Democrats voted against that bill, citing changes to Medicaid and the food stamps program that imposed work requirements on many of those receiving benefits, and because they said the bill provided tax cuts to the wealthy.
The president’s visit comes as polls show public uncertainty and discontent with the economy as the midterm elections near and Lawler’s seat will potentially be competitive this fall.
Lawler’s district is currently the only race in New York that Cook Political Report, the independent nonpartisan index and analysis group, considers a true “tossup.” Lawler is running for a third term in one of only three districts nationwide represented by a Republican that Democrat Kamala Harris won in 2024, according to an analysis by Sabato’s Crystal Ball. Since he unseated Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Sean Patrick Maloney in 2022, Lawler has proved to have staying power in the blue district, winning in 2024 by four points. He passed on a potential run for governor last summer.
A number of Democratic candidates will face off in the state’s primaries next month to be the one to face Lawler in the fall.
The 17th District is made up of Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and southern Dutchess counties.
