Darren Beattie, special envoy of Donald Trump’s government to Brazil, has an official visit scheduled for Monday (16) without having requested meetings with the Planalto Palace or Itamaraty.
The representative’s initial focus is a meeting with Jair Bolsonaro in prison, made possible after a request for authorization by the former president’s legal defense.
Lula’s administration interprets the move as an attempt at electoral interference to benefit senator Flávio Bolsonaro.
Beattie, a critic of Supreme Court justice Alexandre de Moraes and close to Eduardo Bolsonaro, intends to analyze Brazil’s electoral system and judicial decisions regarding the blocking of social media accounts.
The agenda includes a seminar in São Paulo and meetings at the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
The envoy’s conduct is seen as part of a strategy by a second-tier segment of the U.S. government to undermine relations between Lula and Trump.
Among the points of tension are the possible designation of the criminal factions CV and PCC as terrorist groups by the United States and trade investigations by the White House that could lead to sanctions during the electoral campaign.
