WASHINGTON, D.C. (NEWS 15) — U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy said he has no regrets about his vote to convict President Donald Trump on impeachment charges in January 2021, a decision that angered the MAGA base and led to Louisiana’s adoption of closed primaries.
Most political observers agree Louisiana adopted closed primaries this election cycle for one reason: to get Cassidy out of office. The senator’s impeachment vote angered the MAGA base, including Gov. Jeff Landry.
In a conference call with reporters on Tuesday, the lame duck senator stood by his crucial vote from five years ago.
“You know, I’ve been asked that and asked that and asked that. I voted to support the Constitution, and I will go to my grave saying, ‘My gosh, I had the privilege of voting to support the Constitution.’ I have no regrets whatsoever. Next- next- next question!” he stated.
Cassidy noted he is not sure what his future holds or whether he will practice medicine again, but wants his final seven months in office to be meaningful.
