Former president Jair Bolsonaro asked Supreme Federal Court justice Alexandre de Moraes for authorization to receive a prison visit from Darren Beattie, an ally of Donald Trump.
Beattie was appointed by the U.S. government as senior policy adviser for Brazil at the State Department, a position that previously had no occupant. Close to Eduardo Bolsonaro, the former president’s son, he criticized Moraes on social media last year and accused him of leading a system of “persecution and censorship” against Bolsonaro.
According to the defense, Beattie is expected to travel to São Paulo and Brasília next week, with an agenda that includes a meeting with senator and presidential hopeful Flávio Bolsonaro as well as engagements related to the Brazilian electoral scenario.
In a petition sent to Moraes, lawyer Paulo da Cunha Bueno requests exceptional authorization for the visit outside the regular visiting days. The defense suggests the meeting take place in the afternoon of March 16 or on the morning of March 17.
The request also asks that Beattie be allowed to attend with an interpreter, since Bolsonaro is not fluent in English.
