‘Wait a Minute’: Kimmel Pounces on Trump’s Old Age Joke – latenighter.com
/ News
After devoting much of Monday night’s monologue to his latest clash with Donald Trump, Jimmy Kimmel mostly sidestepped the topic Tuesday—until the president handed him an opening.
While discussing the state visit of King Charles III, Kimmel played a clip of Trump addressing the king Tuesday at the White House, where the president reflected on his parents’ 63-year marriage before turning the joke on himself.
“My wonderful mother… and my father were married for 63 years,” Trump said before turning toward his wife Melania. “That’s a record we won’t be able to match, darling. I’m sorry. Just not going to work out that way.”
That prompted Kimmel to pause.
“Wait a minute,” he said. “Did he just make a joke about his death? He should be fired for that.”
Coming less than 24 hours after Trump demanded ABC fire him over jokes made during last week’s faux White House Correspondents’ Dinner roast, Kimmel continued, “Only Donald Trump would demand I be fired for making a joke about his old age… and then a day later go out and make a joke about his own old age!”
It was the ABC host’s lone direct reference to the still reverberating calls for his firing Tuesday night.
Also left unaddressed was another major development earlier Tuesday: the FCC’s order requiring Disney to seek early renewal of all ABC’s local broadcast licenses, deepening pressure on Kimmel’s parent company amid the president’s widening attacks.
