Trump warns Democrats will impeach him if Republicans lose Congress – Türkiye Today
U.S. President Donald Trump said in a White House interview that U.S. military operations against Iran have neutralized the country’s nuclear threat but stopped short of full completion, warning that a Democratic takeover of Congress in November’s midterm elections would likely trigger another impeachment attempt against him.
Trump made the remarks in a wide-ranging sit-down with Sharyl Attkisson of “Full Measure with Sharyl Attkisson,” covering Iran, domestic politics, immigration and his son Barron Trump’s potential political future.
On the military campaign against Iran, Trump pushed back on the suggestion that combat operations had concluded. “They are defeated, but that doesn’t mean they’re done,” he said, adding that the United States had struck roughly 70% of its intended targets. He said remaining strikes would amount to “final touches” and that even without them, it would take Iran “many years to rebuild.”
Trump framed the decision to act against Iran as rooted in nuclear nonproliferation, arguing the country could not be permitted to acquire a nuclear weapon. He credited his first-term withdrawal from the Obama-era Iran nuclear deal with preventing Tehran from already having obtained one, claiming Iran had possessed missiles capable of reaching Europe.
Attkisson noted that the political and media environment rarely allows leaders to absorb short-term costs, such as rising gas prices, in exchange for longer-term strategic goals. The Trump administration has signaled that fuel prices are expected to fall.
With congressional midterm elections roughly six months away, Trump was asked how a Republican loss of Congress would affect his presidency. He said Democrats “will find a reason to impeach me,” describing his first term as “the greatest first term in the history of it.”
He added that his administration does not “play like them,” characterizing Democratic policy positions on transgender issues, immigration and border security as politically self-defeating.
Trump repeated several immigration-related figures without citing specific sources, claiming that of approximately 25 million people who entered the country during the Biden administration, nearly 12,000 were murderers, more than half of whom he said committed multiple killings.
He described the current border as “the strongest we’ve ever had” and claimed that for 11 months, no one had entered the country illegally, attributing that to a deterrence effect, saying potential crossers no longer attempt the journey because “they know they’re not going to get through.”
Trump also claimed that murders in the United States have fallen to their lowest level in 125 years, since roughly 1900, describing the country as having gone from a “dead country” to “the hottest country anywhere in the world.”
