President Donald Trump made a striking announcement on Monday regarding the recently reached US-Iran agreement, stating that “Iran has agreed never to possess a nuclear weapon.” Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump also addressed reports that the United States would pay Iran $300 million as part of the deal. “Also, the story that the US is paying Iran 300 million dollars is fake news, put out by the ‘Dumocrats’,” he said, using a derogatory blend of “dumb” and “Democrats.” The post did not provide further details on the nuclear commitment.
The US and Iran reached a memorandum of understanding following months of conflict that began with US-Israeli strikes on Iran on Feb. 28. The deal includes a permanent ceasefire on all fronts, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz within 30 days, and the lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil. The agreement is set to be signed in Switzerland on Friday, with Vice President JD Vance representing the US. Trump has previously stated that Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei has approved the deal.
