Seth Meyers mocks Elon Musk's odd behavior during China trip – wonderwall.com
Late-night host Seth Meyers used part of his A Closer Look – Late Night with Seth Meyers segment to mock Elon Musk’s behavior during Donald Trump’s state visit to China, using video clips and one-liners to contrast Musk’s awkward public moments with the seriousness of the diplomatic setting.
Meyers opened by noting that conservatives had not criticized Trump for bringing his son Eric Trump to China, arguing that Hunter Biden would likely face intense scrutiny in a similar situation.
He added that Eric was not alone, as Donald was accompanied by major tech executives, including Elon, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Apple CEO Tim Cook.
Seth joked, “Oh my God, that sounds like the worst guys’ weekend ever. Maybe you should invite Hunter Biden just to lighten things up.”
Seth then turned his attention to Elon, comparing him to a college freshman listening in awe to exaggerated stories from Hunter. Mimicking Elon’s voice, he joked, “If I ever saw a girl with her top off, I’d be so excited I’d jump for joy.”
To reinforce the bit, Seth aired footage from a 2024 Trump rally in Pennsylvania showing Elon literally jumping in excitement.
The tone shifted as Seth stressed the importance of composure during a summit between Donald and Chinese President Xi Jinping, describing it as a meeting between “two geopolitical rivals during a time of major global conflict.” He added that Elon simply needed to “attend the state banquet and be normal.”
The show then played clips of Elon making exaggerated facial expressions during the banquet. Seth reacted, “WHAT THE F*** ARE YOU DOING, DUDE?! You look like an 8-year-old who’s ruining the family Christmas card!”
Elon Musk was seen posing for selfies with Lei Jun, the head of Chinese tech giant Xiaomi, and Tim Cook at a state banquet for President Donald Trump in Beijing on Thursday, held as part of the U.S. president’s official visit to China. Video from the gathering captured Musk… pic.twitter.com/qNIwpESzRR
The footage came from the formal state dinner hosted in the Golden Room of the Great Hall of the People, during Donald’s three-day visit to China.
During the banquet, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun leaned in for a photo with Elon at the long dining table. He, apparently mid-conversation, puffed out his cheeks in a mock-exasperated expression before shifting into a pout for the camera. As Jun prepared for another shot, Elon glanced away, whistled softly and scrolled on his phone while barely acknowledging a man seated nearby.
In another selfie with Tim, Elon appeared startled and uneasy while still seeming to enjoy the attention.
The trip came amid rising tensions over trade, technology and defense, while also overlapping with a fragile U.S.-Iran ceasefire and a dual blockade of the Strait of Hormuz that had driven up energy prices and weighed on global growth.
During talks at the Great Hall of the People, Jinping said, “The whole world is watching our meeting. Currently, a transformation not seen in a century is accelerating across the globe, and the international situation is fluid and turbulent.”
Jinping also announced that both countries had agreed to establish a “constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability.”
