Republican Senator who voted to impeach Trump in 2021 has lost his reelection bid – Tri-State Alert
CHAMBERSBURG – May 16 was the Primary Election in the state of Louisiana.
US Senator Bill Cassidy was anticipating being a shoe-in to be on the ballot in November.
He was wrong. He didn’t get the votes.
The incumbent Senator is the first to lose renomination to a seat in about a decade.
President Donald Trump endorsed Julia Letlow and State Treasure John Fleming for the seat. They will now go to a runoff according to Louisiana election rules
Cassidy had voted to convict Trump in his second impeachment.
Attorney Clint Barkdoll said, “He got trounced. He got less than a quarter of the votes. This is an incumbent US senator, almost unheard of that someone would perform that poorly. And this Letlow, the woman who won, she’s the incumbent Congresswoman from down there. Listeners may remember her name, her husband was the Congressman. He died of COVID during COVID. She then got the appointment to fill his seat, and then became very allied with Donald Trump. He was very publicly supporting her.”
A lot of money was put into the Primary Election in Louisiana.
Barkdoll said, “Trump and Trump PACs put a lot of money into this race. They were always against Cassidy because he voted to convict him in one of the impeachments from his first term, so Trump is actually on a roll. He ousted those Indiana state Senators that refused to do redistricting, got rid of all of them. Now this with Cassidy, and Trump is very much targeting Thomas Massie in Kentucky tomorrow too. He doesn’t think Massey has been good for him, so we’ll see where this goes. One other point on this is, Louisiana has that jungle primary, so you must get to 50%. The other two candidates did not get there, so Julia Letlow and John Fleming, they will now run again to see who the actual Republican nominee is to run in the fall.”
