What’s in a name?
President Trump on Saturday took to his Truth Social platform to float an idea for rebranding ICE in a bid to make the agency seem just a little bit more friendly — and to troll the press, of course. He started off by defending Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents as “Great Patriots who work hard,” despite catching flak from what he derided as “the Dumocrats and the Fake News.”
“The concept I have had for quite some time — A strong feeling that the name of these Patriots, ‘ICE,’ should be changed to, ‘NICE,’ in that it will totally discombobulate Crooked, Dishonest, and Unpatriotic Reporters and Journalists,” the President continued. “For them to say, ‘We went to a NICE Facility today,’ as opposed to ‘ICE’ or, ‘NICE Agents have deported a Violent Drug Dealer,’ they won’t be able to handle it, they will go totally crazy!”
Trump added that the new “N” in the acronym would stand for “National,” making the agency’s new moniker National Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“A much more prestigious name,” he continued. “Everyone loves it, but I have been told by the legendary Tom Homan that the Agents do not love it as much as the other population.”
Then, the president posed the question to his followers, “Who thinks that we should add an ‘N’ to change the name of ‘ICE’ to ‘NICE?’”
Trump has suggested the name change on several occasions in recent months, apparently inspired by an April post on X recommending the switch, “so the media has to say NICE agents all day.”
Trump shared the post on Truth Social, writing: “GREAT IDEA!!! DO IT.”
In the weeks since, both the White House and the Department of Homeland Security — which oversees ICE — have shared memes to their social media accounts endorsing the new name.
It’s not clear what steps Trump has taken, if any, to implement the rebrand, which would require an act of Congress.
The president’s proposal comes amid great debate over immigration, the status of ICE agents and the power they’ve been bestowed by the Trump administration. The agency has faced intense scrutiny during Trump’s second term, which has seen thousands of ICE agents flood major cities across the United States — often against the wishes of local and state officials — with outrage peaking at the start of this year after the high-profile killings of two protesters.
On Jan. 7, ICE Agent Jonathan Ross fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good in a residential neighborhood near downtown Minneapolis. Video of the incident shows Good speaking to the federal agent from inside her car in the moments before Ross opened fire.
“That’s fine, dude, I’m not mad at you,” Good says to Ross from the driver’s seat of her Honda SUV.
Good died at the the scene from gunshot wounds to her head, sparking a series of protests in the Twin Cities.
During a subsequent demonstration days later, Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center, was also shot and killed by federal immigration agents.
In both cases, the White House defended its agents. But local officials blamed the violence on the overwhelming amount of federal agents deployed to the area amid the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.
