President Lula said on Monday (9) that Brazil and South Africa need to prepare militarily for possible attacks during an event alongside South African president Cyril Ramaphosa, who is visiting Brasília.
“Here in South America we present ourselves as a region of peace; nobody here has an atomic bomb. I don’t know if comrade Ramaphosa realizes that if we do not prepare ourselves in terms of defense, one day someone will invade us,” he said.
“It is important to remember that because of the war in Iran, fuel prices are already rising in almost the entire world. The price of oil is increasing a lot and should rise in every country,” he continued.
Brazil already maintains a partnership relationship with South Africa, with which it also shares membership in Brics, the economic group of emerging countries —which includes Iran.
During Ramaphosa’s reception at the Planalto Palace, the heads of state and their ministers signed acts and memorandums of cooperation in the areas of trade, tourism and industry. In his speech, the African leader thanked Brazil for its support regarding the G20 situation.
