Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and U.S. President Donald Trump met on Thursday at the White House. Over three hours, they discussed combating organized crime, tariffs, critical minerals and relations with big tech companies. Proposals were presented, and ministers in attendance described the meeting as positive.
“I leave satisfied. There are no forbidden topics. The only thing we do not give up is our democracy and our sovereignty. Everything else is open for discussion,” Lula said at the Brazilian Embassy after the meeting.
Lula again referred to the “chemistry” between him and Trump and described their relationship as “sincere.” “You know that idea of love at first sight? That thing about chemistry? That’s what happened.”
Despite the cordial tone, there was also tension. Lula said differences between the two governments became clear, including over tariffs. “His minister said one thing, our ministers said another.”
