WASHINGTON (TNND) — House Republicans on Thursday abruptly cancelled a vote on a resolution intended to limit President Donald Trump's war powers in Iran.
GOP leaders had planned a vote on the Democratic-led legislation, which would require Trump to withdraw U.S. forces from the conflict with Iran unless Congress formally authorized military action.
But as opposition within the GOP mounted, leaders ultimately delayed the vote after realizing they likely lacked the support needed to defeat the measure.
Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, sponsored the legislation amid concerns from lawmakers in both parties about the scope of Trump's military actions and the potential for deeper U.S. involvement in the conflict.
At the same time, Republicans are also working to ensure they have the votes to dismiss another war powers resolution in the Senate that advanced to a final vote earlier this week, when four GOP senators supported the resolution and three others were absent from the vote.
The resolutions invoke the War Powers Act, a federal law designed to limit a president's ability to engage U.S. forces in prolonged military conflicts without congressional approval.
Democrats argued Congress must reassert its constitutional authority over war powers, while some Republicans warned the resolutions could undermine the president during an international crisis.
The delayed votes are expected to resurface when lawmakers return in June.
