In July 1974, after months of investigation and debate, the House Judiciary Committee voted to approve three articles of impeachment against President Richard Nixon relating to the attempted cover-up his role in the June 1972 break-in of the Democratic National Committee’s offices in the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C.
The Aug. 5, 1974, release of a “smoking gun” recording of a conversation in the Oval Office left no doubt as to Nixon’s involvement in the Watergate break-in cover-up. Republican congressional leaders met with Nixon shortly thereafter and advised him that impeachment by the House and conviction by the Senate was a virtual certainty. On Aug. 9, Nixon resigned.
Note that it was the Republicans who confronted Nixon, not the Democrats.
The Republicans in Congress must act to stop the impeachable activities that are daily events with the current administration.
