Donald Trump met with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the White House on Thursday to discuss restoring economic ties between the United States and Brazil after nearly a year of strained relations, marked by the imposition of 50% tariffs on Brazilian goods and the conviction of former President Jair Bolsonaro. The two leaders held a lengthy closed-door meeting and, unusually, skipped the now-routine press conference in the Oval Office.
Their discussions covered trade, tariffs, security, and strategic minerals. Lula said Brazil was open to outside investment in its resources, telling reporters: “We have no vetoes,” and extending that invitation not only to the United States but also to Europe and Asia. “The only thing we will not give up is our democracy and our sovereignty,” he said.

Later, speaking at the Brazilian embassy in Washington, Lula said, “I leave here with the conviction that we have taken an important step in consolidating the historic democratic relationship between Brazil and the United States.” He described the U.S. and Brazil as the “two largest democracies in the hemisphere” and said their relationship “can truly serve as an example to the world.”
He also criticized “the unilateralism put into practice through President Trump’s tariffs” and announced the creation of a bilateral working group to address trade disputes. “Whoever is in the wrong will have to back down,” Lula said.
Lula added that he made a joke to Trump about the Brazilian national team’s trip to the United States for the World Cup next June, saying: “I hope you don’t revoke the visas for the Brazilian national team—which will arrive in the United States to compete in the World Cup starting next June—because we’re coming here to win.” He said Trump laughed.
Trump, meanwhile, offered only a brief comment on Truth Social, saying the meeting “went very well” and that another one would be arranged in the coming months.
