President Donald Trump turns 80 today, becoming only the second president to reach that milestone while in office, even as a majority of Americans express concern about his age and fitness for the role.
Trump himself has been publicly ambivalent about the occasion. “You don’t have to wish me happy birthday because I’m not happy about that birthday that I’m having,” he said in a video with Dr. Mehmet Oz this week. “It’s not a number I like.”
The age question has shadowed Trump’s second term from the start. A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in February found that six in ten Americans, including a significant slice of Republicans, think the president has become erratic as he ages. The Atlantic reported in May that 59 percent of Americans expressed concerns about Trump’s fitness for office, according to a separate poll.
Trump’s approach to the age issue differs markedly from his predecessor. According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump and his advisers have made a strategic decision to turn the president into an omnipresent figure in American life, drawing a contrast with Joe Biden. The strategy surfaces both vigor and visible signs of aging: Trump makes regular marathon appearances in the Oval Office, answers reporters’ cold calls, and posts on social media at all hours—yet was recently photographed appearing to nod off while seated at an NBA Finals game in New York.
Trump will be 82 by the end of his second term in 2028. Biden, who left office in January, was 82 years old when he departed the White House, making him the oldest president to serve. Trump’s physician declared him in “excellent health” following his most recent physical exam in May, which notably included consultation with 22 medical specialists, nearly double the number from prior checkups, according to CNN and The Washington Post.
The fitness question is not new for Trump. When Biden faced similar scrutiny during his presidency, Trump repeatedly mocked him as “Sleepy Joe.” Now, as Trump approaches his 80th birthday, some observers have turned the same scrutiny toward him. The Wall Street Journal noted that while Trump remains publicly active, the relentless schedule also exposes moments that fuel age-related concerns among voters.
