From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
President Donald Trump has shared the exact same post on Truth Social three times over the past three weeks.
The 141-word post — which takes aim at Democrats and the media over the ongoing Iran war — resurfaced Monday amid the latest breakdown in prolonged negotiations.
The 79-year-old president said that if Iran were to wave the “white flag” and surrender, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and other outlets would portray it as “a Masterful and Brilliant Victory over The United States of America.”
“The Dumacrats and Media have totally lost their way,” he added. “They have gone absolutely CRAZY!!!”
The post came the same day that Iranian state media reported Tehran had suspended peace talks with the U.S., citing Israel’s attacks on Lebanon — which have proved a sticking point for weeks.
Frustrated by the setback, Trump reportedly lashed out at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a phone call, calling him “f****** crazy” and adding, “Everybody hates Israel because of this,” according to Axios.
Multiple recent polls indicate the Iran war — which has spread violence across the Middle East and spiked global fuel prices — is deeply unpopular with Americans.
In a Marist survey released earlier this month, 60 percent of respondents said they opposed the conflict, while just 33 percent said they approve.
Trump, who frequently posts more than a dozen times a day, first shared the post about Iranian surrender on May 18. He again posted the exact same text on May 26, shortly after returning from Walter Reed, where he underwent his second checkup since October.
Following the roughly three-and-a-half-hour exam, Trump wrote on Truth Social that “everything” had “checked out PERFECTLY,” even as questions about his physical and mental fitness intensify ahead of his 80th birthday.
Photographers have repeatedly documented bruising on the president’s hands, swelling in his legs and moments where he appeared to briefly doze off during official events, incidents the White House and Trump allies have dismissed.
An April Ipsos poll found that just 40 percent of Americans believe Trump has the mental sharpness needed to serve as president — a seven-point decline from several months earlier. A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted the same month found that 51 percent of Americans believe that Trump’s mental faculties declined over 2025 and early 2026.
