WASHINGTON — All eyes on are on the National Mall. A major transformation of one of D.C.’s most iconic landmarks is nearing the finish line.
During a White House event, President Donald Trump announced the Reflecting Pool would get a final coat of protection on Wednesday.
“It’ll last for 50 to 100 years before you have to do anything, very strong, powerful substance that we used,” Trump told reporters. At one point, he held up a poster that said: “Our Pool is Bigger than Skyscrapers.”

Trump first announced plans to resurface the pool and paint it “American flag blue” back in April
“You’re going to end up with a beautiful, beautiful reflecting pool, the way it’s supposed to be,” he said. “Much better than it ever was, actually.”
Trump called the current pool “filthy” and showed images of the construction process, saying that the swimming-pool-style surface material would be made of the “latest and greatest filament.”
Trump said he called a pool contractor he knows from his work as a real estate developer for a quote to remove the pool’s current granite. The contractor offered to do it for $1.5 million.
Water began flowing shortly after noon Thursday.
The two thousand-foot-long pool is due east of the Lincoln Memorial and is one of the many iconic features in the heart of Washington D.C.’s National Mall. It is visited by around 24 million visitors annually.
