WASHINGTON (TNND) – The week began with a broken ceasefire between Israel and Iran, not the peace deal President Donald Trump said could materialize over the weekend.
“Both sides, Israel and Iran, are looking to do an immediate CEASEFIRE! Final negotiations on “Peace” are proceeding, subject to ignorance or stupidity getting in its way," Trump posted on social media early Monday morning following a half day of strikes between the warring countries.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose country has been mediating talks between the United States and Iran, said, “(E)specially when the final objective is just about to be achieved, we sincerely urge all sides to exercise restraint and give peace a little more chance.”
Iran's ability to launch strikes on Israel contradicts what Trump has repeatedly claimed about Iran's military capabilities. Two days before this latest round of fire, Trump told NBC News, “In three months, I’ve demolished the navy, the air force, anti-aircraft. They have no radar. They have no nothing.”
Both Iran and Israel said they would resume strikes if provoked.
“If the Zionist-American evil coalition makes another mistake, the region will become hell for them,” said Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr.
In a video statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “If the terrorist regime makes the mistake and attacks us again, we will respond forcefully.”
Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen also stepped into the fight, claiming responsibility for a round of strikes on northern Israel and threatening to target ships affiliated with Israel in the Red Sea.
Trump has shown reluctance to resume full-scale military operations against Iran, but it's not off the table.
“My red line would be if I think I wasn’t going to make a deal or if I wasn’t going to make a deal fast enough," Trump said.
Ebrahim Azizi, the head of the Iranian parliament’s national security and foreign policy committee, told CNN they view negotiations as "part of the battle."
"We do not see a serious will to reach a framework that could actually be implemented. And I think with regard to Iran's blocked assets, this is in fact a very clear and prominent example of that. As for uranium-enriched materials, enrichment itself and nuclear issues, we are not currently negotiating on those matters. There is no discussion of them," Azizi said.
Trump has repeatedly claimed the Iranians have already agreed not to develop a nuclear weapon.
