US President Donald Trump announced that the Islamic Republic has agreed not to acquire nuclear weapons and also said Mojtaba Khamenei is involved in the negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
In an interview with the “Pod Force One” podcast, published on Wednesday, June 3, Trump said: “They have already agreed not to have a nuclear weapon.”
In response to a question about Mojtaba Khamenei’s role in the negotiations between the Islamic Republic and the United States, he added: “He is completely involved in this matter. I think they hold a great deal of respect for him.”
The US President also said he had heard that Mojtaba Khamenei is “not doing very well.” Despite this, he said, Mojtaba has approved the talks and is being kept updated on the progress of the negotiations. Trump added: “I would like to meet him. We’ll probably meet at some point; it depends on how things go.”
Trump described the Iran issue as “a great success” and, regarding the ongoing negotiations between the two countries, said: “We are working on a deal, and if this deal is reached, it will be very good. If it isn’t reached, that’s fine too. Then we will proceed in another way.”
The US President did not elaborate on what he meant by “another way,” but he had previously stated several times that Washington could resume strikes against Iran if necessary.
He also confirmed that he had a sharp conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump said: “Yes, I did. I wouldn’t say I was angry, but I was a bit perturbed by his endless war with Lebanon.”
Nevertheless, the US President emphasized that he maintains good relations with Netanyahu.
At the same time, the news website Axios reported that during his Sunday night phone call with Netanyahu, Trump called him “crazy” and said: “If it weren’t for me, you would be in prison right now.” This report has drawn widespread coverage, particularly in Israel.
Meanwhile, negotiations between Tehran and Washington continue following the cessation of military clashes between the US, Israel, and Iran. Trump expressed hope that these talks would lead to a deal that, according to him, would prevent the Islamic Republic from attaining nuclear weapons.
