President Donald Trump held a meeting in the White House Situation Room Friday to make a “final determination” on a deal that would extend a ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran for another 60 days.
By Friday afternoon, no official word on the deal had been announced.
If approved, the temporary framework would extend the ceasefire and launch new talks over Iran’s nuclear program. In exchange, the U.S. would gradually lift its naval blockade on Iranian ports.
The agreement also reportedly ensures Iran does not impose tolls on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, which was free of tolls before the war began.
Iran’s chief negotiator responded Friday, saying “no trust in guarantees or words,” emphasizing continued distrust between the U.S. and Iran.
Despite discussions of a potential deal, the U.S. is still applying economic pressure on Iran. The Treasury Department recently announced additional sanctions targeting Iranian oil sales.
Meanwhile, the leader of the U.N.’s nuclear agency believes that about half of Iran’s enriched uranium remains stored in a complex in central Iran. Experts estimate the stockpile could help Iran build up to 10 nuclear bombs.
A key aspect of the current deal is determining what to do with the enriched uranium and who would take control of it.
Global markets rose, and oil prices dropped amid talks of a potential deal between the U.S. and Iran Friday.
The national average for gas also dipped slightly to $4.39 per gallon, according to AAA. However, at least one energy expert says it could take until Labor Day for pressures at the pump to ease.
