WASHINGTON — It’s another tick down for President Donald Trump.
A new Marquette Law School poll released Wednesday shows his approval rating dropping another point from April to May. It’s 38% nationally, while 62% disapprove. His approval rating has now dropped 10 points since he took office in January of last year.
“The things that are clearly driving that are very low approval ratings on handling inflation and the economy,” said Charles Franklin, the Marquette Law School Poll director.
The poll shows inflation and the cost of living remains the top issue for Americans across the country, but only 22% approve of how the president has handled it. And only 19% approve of his handling of gas prices.
“Whether it’s gas prices or grocery prices, the things that pretty much everybody has to buy pretty much every week, perception is that those things are worse,” Franklin said. “Almost everything is net negative, more disapproval than approval, of President Trump.”
Franklin said voter attitudes toward the Iran war are highly negative. Eighty-one percent of people don’t believe the U.S. has achieved its goals for the war, and 72% of people say it’s not worth the cost. The ceasefire is popular, with 70% approving. The president’s threat to resume bombing in Iran is not popular. Seventy-seven percent say it shouldn’t resume.
“And among MAGA Republicans – Republicans who are favorable to the MAGA movement – only 52% there say we should resume the bombing,” Franklin said. “So even among Trump’s most loyal base, support for increasing the bombing or the military action in Iran is not very strong at all.”
Several Republicans who were recently endorsed by the president in their primary elections were successful —until Tuesday, when his pick in the Iowa governor’s race lost.
In the survey, 71% of Republicans said they would back the Trump-supported candidate in a primary. His influence is even higher with MAGA Republicans — 87% said they would vote for President Trump’s pick. But for Republicans who are not favorable to MAGA, only 30% would vote for the primary candidate President Trump supported.
“MAGA Republicans are more likely to vote in the primaries, they’re more loyal to the president, and they’re much more likely to say they would back a candidate he endorsed, even against a Republican incumbent that previously has been elected from their state or district,” Franklin said.
1,001 adults nationwide were interviewed from May 20 and 26. There’s a margin of error of +/-3.4 percentage points.
