Marquette Polls: Americans see Supreme Court favoring Trump, President's approval continues to slide – WTMJ
MILWAUKEE— Two new Marquette Law School national polls paint a mixed picture for President Donald Trump, showing his approval ratings continuing to decline while many Americans believe the U.S. Supreme Court frequently rules in his favor.
The latest survey found 61% of adults believe the Supreme Court rules for Trump “almost always” or “most of the time.” A majority of respondents, 57%, also said they believe the Court goes out of its way to avoid issuing rulings Trump might refuse to obey.
Americans remain divided over the motivations behind Supreme Court decisions, with 52% saying politics drives the Court’s rulings and 48% saying decisions are primarily based on the law.
Despite those concerns, approval of the Supreme Court rose slightly to 46% in May, up from 42% in April.
The poll also found strong support for changes to nation’s highest court. 79% of respondents favor fixed terms for Supreme Court justices, while Americans are evenly split on expanding the Court beyond its current nine members.
On several major legal issues involving the Trump administration, respondents largely disagreed with positions advanced by the president. 68% said birthright citizenship should remain protected under the 14th Amendment, and 66% said presidents should not have the authority to remove members of the Federal Reserve Board.
Meanwhile, 63% said state laws banning transgender athletes from competing on girls’ and women’s sports teams should be upheld.
The Supreme Court findings come one day after another Marquette Law School national survey showed President Trump’s overall approval rating continuing its downward trend.
That Marquette Law School poll found 38% approve of the job Trump is doing as president, while 62% disapprove. Trump’s approval has steadily declined from 48% at the start of his second term in early 2025.
The president’s weakest ratings come on economic issues. Just 30% approved of his handling of the economy, while 22% approved of his approach to inflation and the cost of living. Approval on gasoline prices was even lower at 19%.
The survey found inflation remains the public’s top concern, with 37% naming it as the most important issue facing the country.
While President Trump’s approval numbers have slipped nationally, the poll found he continues to wield significant influence within the Republican Party. 71% of Republicans say they would support a candidate endorsed by Trump in a GOP primary over an incumbent Republican opposed by the president.
The Marquette Law School Poll surveyed 1,001 adults nationwide between May 20 and May 26. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
