On May 14, U.S. President Donald Trump led a large delegation to Beijing for a summit with Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping. The accompanying team included Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Hegseth, as well as prominent business leaders such as Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Apple CEO Tim Cook.
However, among the formally dressed attendees posing for group photos, Musk became the main focus. He was seen repeatedly rotating while holding his phone to record videos and take photos, acting casually in a way that strongly contrasted with the serious atmosphere on site. On the platform X, a user named “XieJackie” shared a video clip and wrote: “Musk is back in his natural state, smiling and filming everything around him like a child.” The post quickly sparked widespread discussion.
pic.twitter.com/UGgOCsSgs9
Musk not only “played with his phone” during the event, but also actively responded to users on X via VPN access, replying to related posts with crying-laughing emojis (😂). Some users described him as “a big boy in his 50s,” while others were curious about how he managed to access X in China’s tightly controlled internet environment.
Standing out due to his height, Musk appeared to “tower over others” in the delegation. His relaxed and lively behavior contrasted sharply with the formally dressed and serious demeanor of other members, prompting online comments calling him “the least serious one there.”

The Trump visit delegation was notably powerful, with discussions focusing on trade, energy, the Iran conflict, and the Strait of Hormuz. Trump had earlier claimed that Xi agreed to purchase American soybeans and energy products and committed to buying 200 Boeing 737 aircraft. Both sides also agreed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open and that Iran must never be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons.

While Musk’s relaxed behavior appeared somewhat out of place in a formal diplomatic setting, it reflected his consistent personal style and unexpectedly became a focal point of online discussion during the Trump–Xi summit.
