President Lula said that a possible intervention by Donald Trump in Brazil’s elections would ultimately help him politically. The statement comes after the U.S. president saw his ally Viktor Orbán defeated in Hungary after 16 years in power, despite direct support from Trump’s campaign.
Lula said he does not fear external interference, noting that moments of high popularity occurred when Trump imposed steep tariffs on Brazilian products and defended Jair Bolsonaro’s conduct. For the Workers’ Party leader, such attempts at interference allow him to advance a narrative of national sovereignty, placing opponents on the defensive.
The president criticized rivals who seek international backing, mentioning the request for intervention made by former congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro to Trump, which he described as unprecedented interference. Lula also supported Pope Leo XIV’s criticism of Trump after the Republican posted an AI-generated image comparing himself to Jesus Christ, calling the act a mistake for democracy.
