WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump said the United States' peace deal with Iran is now "complete" and announced the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping.
He shared the news on Sunday — which marked his 80th birthday — in a Truth Social post.
In a later Truth Social post, Trump wrote, "oil will flow on both ends again for the Region, and the World!"
The news comes one day after Trump said a deal was expected to be signed, vowing that the agreement would prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon while reopening the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy transit routes.
The U.S. previously said it would ease its blockade of Iranian ports as the Strait reopens, and would agree to relax sanctions to allow Iran to sell more of its oil and strengthen its battered economy.
It was not immediately clear whether Iranian officials had formally confirmed Trump's announcement, but Iranian state media reported key mediator Pakistan’s announcement of the deal.
Trump on Saturday said the agreement is "the exact opposite" from the 2015 nuclear accord negotiated when former President Barack Obama was in office. Trump has long criticized that deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, arguing it failed to permanently prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.
In a previous social media post, Trump said Iran no longer seeks a nuclear weapon and would not obtain one through "purchase, development, or any other form of procurement." He also said no money would change hands as part of the agreement.
Trump added that nuclear material remaining in Iran would eventually be removed and destroyed.
The signing will be held on Friday in Switzerland.
