WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Israeli military launched strikes on Hezbollah targets in Beirut on Sunday, as President Donald Trump indicated an agreement between the U.S. and Iran is ready to be signed.
Trump responded to the attacks in a Truth Social post on Sunday, writing that they "should not have happened, particularly on a special day when we are so close to a Peace Deal with Iran."
"Let’s not blow it!" Trump wrote, adding that Israel has a right to defend itself, but all sides should stand down.
Iran threatened a military response to the strikes, which further complicates a deal expected to be signed on Sunday. Civil Defense found three bodies and six wounded people in the rubble.
Trump has continuously pressed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to end hard-hitting strikes while negotiations are finalized.
Iran wants the deal to include an end to the fighting in Lebanon.
"We are very close to a Deal that will bring peace to the region, including to Lebanon," Trump wrote on Sunday.
"The Deal is scheduled to get signed tomorrow, and immediately after it is signed, the Hormuz Strait is OPEN TO ALL," Trump wrote on Truth Social on Saturday afternoon.
Netanyahu's office said the strikes were in response to Hezbollah attacks on the north of the country.
Qatari mediators traveled to Tehran on Sunday to finalize the agreement, according to two regional officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Saturday the deal would be signed Sunday. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, also said the deal would be signed soon.
It is expected to be signed electronically, without an in-person ceremony, though the details are unclear.
