WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held a closed-door meeting in the Oval Office on Thursday to discuss trade and "specifically tariffs," according to Trump.
Trump didn't release many details about the conversation, but added that the "meeting went very well" and "representatives are scheduled to get together to discuss certain key elements."
"Additional meetings will be scheduled over the coming months, as necessary," he added.
Brazil’s Finance Minister Dario Durigan told state broadcaster EBC ahead of the trip that “the goal is to protect Brazil’s population, prioritize the country and maintain constructive dialogue.”
Bilateral relations have shown signs of improvement after Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods, a move he linked to the prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro over his alleged involvement in a coup plot.
Trump and Lula began mending ties at the United Nations General Assembly in September. That encounter was followed by their first private meeting in Malaysia in October, along with subsequent phone conversations.
Security remains a key area of tension. The Trump administration is reportedly considering designating Brazil’s largest criminal factions — the Red Command (CV) and the First Capital Command (PCC) — as foreign terrorist organizations.
